Every homeowner would agree that rodent control is an absolute must, as it might lead to health problems. However, most of us will find mice to be tricky. It isn’t easy to catch them unless we stay on guard 24 hours daily. However, there are some things that you can do to stop their invasion.
First, you need to determine if your home has a rodent invasion. Look for a few tell-tale signs to determine if mice have infested your house. The obvious one would be their droppings. Mouse droppings would be easy to spot, especially if you don’t own a pet. You best believe mice have infested your house if you find droppings around your home. Another telling sign of mice in the house would be the gnawed plastics and furniture, but you must be extra vigilant as they only leave tiny marks.
1. Don’t leave any food out
Please don’t leave a trace of food for pests to make your kitchen less appealing to them. Keep your dry pantry goods in well-sealed containers, clean up crumbs promptly, and don’t leave pet food (or water!) out overnight.
2. Choose a trash can with a secure lid
Food scraps in the trash are super appealing to pests, especially mice. Smith recommends choosing a trash can that stays closed with a secure lid. Try to bring your trash out every night, too. Your kitchen will smell so much better!
3. Sweep nightly - with the right tools
Sweeping might make your kitchen floors appear clean, but mice are experts at tracking down small food particles. Use a mop to clean the kitchen floor at the end of the night to be sure you remove any sticky or unseen residue that might attract pests.
4. Try mouse traps
Snap traps are an effective method for catching one mouse or a small group of them. You can bait them with various foods like cheese and peanut butter. Place the traps strategically behind the furniture or in dark corners where mice like to hide. Please keep it away from your pets and children.
5. Use natural repellents
There are plenty of natural repellents to keep mice away. Soak a cotton ball in cayenne pepper, clove, and/or peppermint oil, then place it in areas you’ve seen mice. The smell is repulsive to mice, so they may be less likely to enter your house.
6. Seal from the outside
No matter what you do in your kitchen, sneaky vermin will find their way in if you don’t prevent entry from the outside. So go outside your home and seal any entry points.
